The rotating collar

Inside the 22ml: how the pod feeds itself

The thing that makes 22ml work inside a 2ml-compliant pod is an internal transfer system, and it is worth understanding because most of the day-to-day quirks of the device come straight out of it.

The three vessels

There is the working chamber — 2ml, sitting directly above the mesh coil, and the only part of the pod that is actually connected to the airway. Then there are two sealed reserves of 10ml each, which hold liquid but are not open to the air path. The coil only ever draws from the 2ml chamber.

The transfer

As you vape, the chamber empties. A pressure-regulated valve allows liquid to pass down from whichever reserve the collar has selected, topping the chamber back up. It is passive — gravity-assisted, driven by the pressure differential created as liquid is consumed. There is no pump, no button and nothing for you to operate. A faint click or gurgle from the pod when a transfer happens is normal.

What that means in practice

• Store it upright. Gravity is doing half the work. A device left on its side overnight will often over-fill the chamber and give you a wet first draw.
• Let new kits settle before use. The chamber is not necessarily primed out of the box. Five minutes standing upright sorts it.
• Heat and altitude push liquid through. Air in the reserves expands, and the chamber floods. After a flight or a hot car, stand it upright and give it a few minutes before vaping.
• Shaking does not help. It floods the chamber rather than speeding anything up.
• The viewing window shows the reserve, not the chamber. A pod that still shows liquid is not necessarily feeding properly — if it tastes dry, the issue is the chamber or the wick, not the amount of liquid left.

7. Check the charge. Kits do not always arrive fully charged. If the indicator is low, put it on a USB-C lead for a while before you get properly started; a low cell produces noticeably weaker vapour.

Troubleshooting a new kit

It will not fire at all

Check the obvious in order: is it charged, is the pod fully seated, are the contacts clean and dry, and is your hand over the air intake. A brand new kit that does nothing is almost always a flat cell or a pod that has not clicked home.

Weak vapour from the start

Two likely causes. The cell is low — charge it. Or the chamber has not primed, which is the more common one on a brand new kit. Stand it upright for five minutes, take a few gentle puffs, and it should come up to strength.

Harsh or burnt on early puffs

The collar will not turn
