How the Rubik pod system works

A prefilled pod system splits the device into a durable half and a consumable half. The battery section holds the cell, the airflow sensor and the USB-C charging port, and it is designed to outlast many pods. The pod holds the e-liquid, the coil and the mouthpiece in one sealed unit, and it is designed to be used until the flavour fades and then replaced. Nothing is serviceable inside the pod, and nothing needs to be.

The pod seats onto the battery on magnetic contacts. Push it home until it sits flush and the contacts meet. There is no fire button; the airflow sensor detects the draw and closes the circuit for as long as you are inhaling. Release and it opens again.

Priming a fresh pod

New pods leave the factory with wicking material that has not yet fully saturated. Fit the pod, stand the device upright for two or three minutes, then take three or four gentle draws without inhaling before you use it properly. This lets liquid soak evenly into the wick at a low rate. The draw

The 7000 puff rating comes from standardised rig testing: fixed-duration puffs at fixed intervals until the device stops producing vapour. The discrepancy between twenty and nineteen is worth flagging because it catches people out. Fizzy Cherry is currently available as a complete kit but not as a standalone pod. Every other Rubik flavour exists in both forms. The Rubik is the cheapest liquid per millilitre in the catalogue at roughly 33p. One caveat on the puff ratings: 7000 against 6000 on identical liquid volumes means the two devices are not extracting liquid at the same rate, which usually reflects differences in coil resistance and airflow. What actually determines how long a pod lasts

"How long will it last?" is the question we are asked most often about the Rubik, and the honest answer is that four variables swamp the headline puff rating. Understanding them lets you predict your own consumption far better than any number printed on a box.

Draw length

This is the dominant factor by a wide margin. A two-second draw and a five-second draw are both one puff on a counter, but the five-second draw vaporises roughly two and a half times as much liquid. • No vapour, light flashing repeatedly. Flat battery. Charge it.

• Weak flavour on a new pod. Insufficient priming. Stand it upright for ten minutes and take a few gentle draws before judging it.
• Harsh or burnt taste. The wick has dried out and will not recover. Stop using the pod. If it happened on a fresh pod within the first day, contact us.
• Gurgling. Condensation in the airflow path. Remove the pod and tap the mouthpiece gently on a tissue.
• Liquid at the mouthpiece. Normal in small amounts, particularly after a temperature or pressure change. Wipe and continue.

Do not attempt to open or refill a prefilled pod. They are sealed units, the coil is not designed to be re-wicked, and forcing liquid in through the mouthpiece floods the chamber and ruins the pod. If a device is faulty out of the box, contact us rather than dismantling it.

The life of a Rubik pod, start to finish

A 12ml pod goes through three fairly distinct phases, and knowing which one you are in saves a lot of unnecessary worry about whether something has gone wrong.

The first hour. Flavour is at its most vivid and occasionally slightly over-intense, because the wick is fully saturated and the coil is entirely clean. Some profiles — particularly the sweeter ones — read noticeably sharper here than they will for the rest of the pod. This settles.

The long middle. This is where the device spends most of its life, delivering consistent flavour and consistent vapour. Nothing needs doing. If you get an occasional dry note, you are almost always drawing too fast for the wick to keep up; pause for twenty seconds and it recovers.

What the Rubik does not do

Listing limitations is more useful than listing features, so here they are plainly. There is no airflow adjustment — the draw is fixed, and if you want it looser or tighter you are choosing a different device rather than adjusting this one.
